A recent study commissioned by APRA AMCOS (Australasian Performing Right Association Limited/ Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society Limited) to investigate the role of women in music in Australia, found that women make up only 21.7% of APRA AMCOS membership, and share in only 10 percent of the total royalty pool paid to songwriters in Australia. 2016 figures by Triple J found that women were also underrepresented music management and record label positions. Festivals have the lowest representation of females in music, with artists with at least one woman, making up as little as 9% of festival lineups studied.
The aim of this special open mic – LADIES ON STAGE SPECIAL is to showcase female artists from the Central Coast, and invite female artists from areas such Newcastle and Sydney – extending the potential reach of audience, and bringing a unique, noteworthy event to the Central Coast. Gender fluid, and non-binary artists are highly encouraged to take part.
The Rhythm Hut is committed to having a greater gender diversity on our stage, and behind the scenes. We would love to encourage ALL women, gender fluid and non-binary artists and arts workers to be involved in this special event. We’re looking for all types of artists – musicians, singers, poets, dancers, artists to display work, comedians, magicians – as well as females working behind the scenes on sound, promotion, hosts and much more!
Men aren’t excluded from this event! In fact we would LOVE nothing more than the room to be filled with men in the audience. Artists are also welcome to perform with men in the act, providing the majority of the act members are female/non-binary/gender fluid.
Our local female ambassador for this event is Chelsea Berman. Chelsea contacted us last year about supporting our women on stage events, and we think she’s perfect!
As a young woman who’s been on the profession music scene for 5 years, and already racking up many accolades including; Winner Homegrown Songwriting Competition (2015), Winner Central Coast Country Music Festival Busking Competition (2013) and Finalist in the Australian Songwriters Association Songwriting Competition (2014, 2015 & 2016), Chelsea is certainly one to watch.
In early 2018 she released her first solo EP, Better Than Ever. Debuting at number four on the Itunes country album charts, her EP has seen a lot of media attention. Joining writing forces with the likes of Chelsea Basham and Rachael Fahim, Chelsea has started out strong in the country music industry and plans to stay there.
Chelsea will be opening the evening for us, and playing a couple of songs to get the stage warmed up and ready for all the other amazing acts to follow.
Registration for open mic begins at 6.00pm on the night, with performances from 6.30pm. Each act is allocated 10min – STRICTLY first in best dressed. If there is time left over at the end, we love all in jams or the chance for artists to perform again.
The Rhythm Hut is an all ages licensed venue, with dinner, desserts and drinks available to purchase on the night. Entry by donation, stick around for the lucky door raffle drawn at the end of the night.
