For years Susie Hurley saw music simply as a faithful, loving friend. It was a loyal companion that had always been there – from the early mother-daughter piano duets, to the many performances at Newtown Performing Arts High, and through countless adventures across the globe.

But one day she looked her old friend square in the face and realised that they had been in love all along. In her own words “…it just felt so right”.

Since then, the partnership has blossomed. Susie’s unique, soulful voice and emotive, angular songs have touched hundreds of people across the country. They have taken her to venues up and down the eastern seaboard, from The Vanguard and the Factory Theatre in Sydney’s inner west to The Many Boatshed and The Rhythm Hut on the coast.

The 2012 debut EP from Susie Hurley and the Hurricanes was critically acclaimed and received airplay on Triple J. As with much of Hurley’s music, the EP reveals a diverse mix of influences from Joni Mitchell to The Doors, flowing from the folk rock tradition but journeying into darker, more angular, syncopated places.

In the past 12 months Susie’s musical romance has evolved further with the birth of Night Kite – a new soul, gospel, folk group with a focus on intricate vocal harmonies, body and vocal percussion, and simple instrumentation. This new collaboration has been buttressed by Hurley’s studies at the Australian Institute of Music where she is currently completing a Bachelor of Music and plans to go on to a Masters in Performance.

Dawn is a singer/songwriter based in Denmark, Western Australia. She is a traditional storyteller at heart and her catchy choruses and rich lyrical content make for an engaging performance. Her distinctive sound and the spirit in which she sings her songs has likened her to artists such as Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, however, her driving rhythm lends towards a more Contemporary Folk Rock sound. Her passion to communicate through words and music and her warm stage presence is very evident and an inspiration to all those present.

Dawn released her album “Break of the Day” March of 2016 at the Nannup Music Festival and recently released her follow up album “When did it change?” at the Denmark Festival of Voice in 2017. Dawn performs regularly, clocking up over almost 200 shows over the last four years at festivals, events, pubs, restaurants and house concerts. In addition to playing locally, tours have reached across Western Australia and the Eastern States. Dawn’s recent release “When did it Change? – has been reviewed as “a modern interpretation of a bygone era” (3NRG 99.3 fm), and is receiving regular national airplay.

What better way to wind down the January public holiday, than by listening to Nathan Cavaleri play some tunes and tell a few stories at The Hut – the earthy venue the perfect setting to witness him return to his musical roots.

Cavaleri’s set will consist of his original music, which draws heavily from vintage blues, though incorporates elements of his contemporary influences – with a few covers thrown into the mix too!

Cavaleri solidified his place as a guitarist in the music industry, collaborating with the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Tommy Emmanuel and Diesel at ten, who all appeared on his 1993 debut album Jammin’ With the Cats. He made his way to the USA where we was signed to Michael Jackson’s label, after a bidding war between the labels of Madonna and Prince.

He toured with blues legend B.B King and perform with Bonnie Raitt, Dr John, Etta James and Joe Lewis Walker at King’s Presidential Award Ceremony – and that was by age fifteen!

As an adult, Cavaleri formed blues/rock band Nat Col and the Kings with Col Hatchman from The Screaming Jets, but is now back performing under his own name.

With an album in the works and a big tour coming up, Cavaleri’s gig at The Rhythm Hut will be a great chance to catch the musician in a more intimate setting.
