The October 5 Lands Experience ft. On The Stoop

OTS_web

The 5 Lands Experience is back for October. A regular monthly community event at The Rhythm Hut in Gosford, each month, The 5 Lands Experience begins with a free community drum circle, at 5pm all ages and levels encouraged. Bring your own drum or have a go with ours! We’ll have loads of different percussion for everyone to try. A well-established, well-known local band, The 5 Lands Band has run for over 9 years around the Central Coast – from Terrigal, to Erina and to Gosford.

Named after originally forming to perform at the popular Central Coast 5 Lands Walk in Terrigal, the ever-changing line up of The 5 Lands Band, lead by Rendra Freestone, brings together some of the top musicians from the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle. The unique band doesn’t practice, nor write music together, but rather create improvised jams, based on funk, jazz, folk and groove. Well known for getting the dance floor filled, the 5 Lands Band kick off music at 6.30pm.

Featured Act On The Stoop don’t plan on sticking to the rules. Or expectations. Or the straight path. One minute they are some swinging hot jazz group with barbs that could easily have some from an even sharper-tongued Tim Minchin, the next they are making like a post-punk walking funk bass line with honking sax, as if The Laughing Clowns and The Stranglers spawned, while another has that saxophone playing Latin lines in tandem with a trumpet for a mutated surf song about exactly how to “get your end in” when “I ain’t no Vincent De Paul…you ain’t no Mother Teresa”. And that is only half the songs on their second album, Home, so I’ve not mentioned the Cuban social club moment, the Mexican hat dance, the ska skank or the parlour group playing a polite serenade in a London club between another of those dash annoying bombing raids. Close your eyes and this could just as easily be happening in some ex factory space in downtown New York, pitching James Chance and The Pretenders against a dub head who really loves his South American music.

This could be eight different bands from eight different corners of the world except it’s more like one fevered collective musical brain firing off ideas like skyrockets. Look, there’s one exploding above you right now.
